The newly formed Opera Ensemble is
open to Intermediate & Senior level students.
This is an addition to MadCAP’s
Ensembles especially for young people with an interest in learning more
about singing opera. This year the Ensemble will focus on Opera Buffa which
is a form of opera that has a lot of humor. Opera Buffa emerged as a way for
the common man to enjoy and understand opera. Usually, Opera Buffa
characters poked fun at the stuffy aristocrats that frequented traditional
opera performances. These “funny” characters had originally been involved in
Opera Seria (Serious Opera) in minor roles to provide a little humor in
between the serious plots. Opera Buffa became it’s own genre early in the
18th century. We hope this will be a way to educate and involve MadCAP
students with this exciting form of culture.
Opera Project For The 2007-2008
Season: “Pirates Of Penzance”
Join Frederic, a young pirate who is
searching for more to life. He was supposed to learn to become a pilot but
due to his hard of hearing nurse, Ruth; is instead apprenticed, befriended,
and taught by Pirates. In this hilarious story we meet many unusual
characters, namely the Major General who has many young and beautiful
daughters, and the colorful pirates. During this little story Frederic falls
in love with a young maiden by the name of Mabel, while the Pirates fall in
love with the Major General’s daughters. This story is one of Gilbert and
Sullivan’s most famous and most enjoyed.
OTHER ACTIVITIES:
Other projects and activities will be planned by the students at their
summer retreat. These include a fall retreat and Choral Projects
performing in December and February.
